Webquest Presentation

Well it was quite a journey to develop and implement the Webquest on "How to Ebay". After reviewing my original presentation, I felt it needed more, so I embarked on creating a step by step procedure that included screen shots of the actual process.

I was pleased with the results. However, the jury is stll out as to how the general public will recieve this.

The long journey to producing a webquest!

Well, the rubric has been a bit of a problem. I created it several times on Rubistar to return and find it missing? Frustrating. I need to real all of the directions first! I have submitted a question to Beth about changing links to titles and then I can proceed to decorate the webquest. It has been an extremely interesting learning r process.

Class

I do enjoy the discussions we have been having in class. The idea that the partent(s) can access the students grades is a HUGE improvement. With the advent of the $100 laptop, My dream would be for every paret or guardian to have accesss to the internet. It makes us better parents and as Bush would say, a better country.

I just invested in Sprint / Nextel because they are rolling out the WIMAX technology across the country. THey are utilizing their existing cell towers to hang the hardware. WIMAX, when implemented, will provide a broadband signal that exceeds todays cable signal in bandwidth and speed. The hope is to cover every square inch of populated areas in the US. Shares are around $17 each. I predict in the next two years this will double , triple or even more.

Free education at Harvard?
Apparently diversity is still the big buzzword in education. Is this because of our guilt or is there a real need to make the higher echelons of education available to everyone.
I am all for it.

"Starting Over in Oakland" my reactions

Once again, people with vision making a difference. This segment showed the parents being asked about their interest level in improving the schools. It was a misnomer that most people believed that the parents just did not care. At the public gathering, he learned that the parents really did care about their children's education. They needed leaders. They needed a person with vision. The New School Development Program not only opened one, but two new schools in 4 months! "Starting over in Oakland " proved that with the correct leadership, anything is possible.

My comments on the PBS video about Paul Valus

Thank God for people like Paul Valus , a person who is willing to "raise expectations" and not spend his time blaming others for all the problems within todays public school system. He has a proven background. He has made a difference in Chicago and Philadelphia. He is willing to bring his vision to New Orleans. There are far to few leaders today that are willing to make the sacrifices and put in the effort to make a difference. If not now, when?
Which came first , the chicken or the hen? When Paul says " Lets not concentrate on how we got here, but lets concentrate on raising the expectations of what we expect from our students and school system.
I agree with Paul. I know for a fact that we can all take the easy way out and blame others for all of our problems. I also know that we are always creating. And we create what we think about. That means constant vigilance is needed to monitor the way we think. We cannot afford to be victims of circumstance. Instead, like Paul , let us each see how we can become a part of the solution.
I loved where he thought that the teacher that was negative should find a job in another district. What if all of us did not believe that these problems could be fixed?

October 1st, 2007 class blog

Discussion of powerpoints and their effectiveness. I am going to blog and take notes with the presentation.

Presentation of Group 1
What graduation and dropouts means to you. 7000 amaericans drop out of school.
What are the factors: race, special needs, ethnicity, etc.
Unqualified teachers.
Studies show hispanics and blacks are more likely to drop out.
Bar graphs are helpful in communication.
Pennsylvania:
Urban areas are not drawing qualified teachers.
This group offers solutions to their findings. This is a positive presentation.
Their presentation spurred lively conversation.
Interesting information regarding cyberschool.

Presentation 2:
PSSA Reading Scores 5th Grade / Is testing fair?
Are the tests valid.
Their conclusions were in line with the other presentations. Latino and Black populations are not fairing well in these test.
They did not answer their own question of whether the tests were valid.
They discussed at length the problems with the students. Lanquage, unqualified teachers, specail students etc.
Later in the presentation, the group did question the format of the tests and how they are designed. Thus they did anser their original question of whether the tests were valid. My conclusion is that they were not and that the tests should be customized to each sub-group.

Third Group:
PSSA Scores and the problems associated.
Determined that the enviorment has a large influence on the scores.
They offered very valid " things to consider".
They finally adressed the at home issues.

Fourth Group
This group reviewed reading scores of 9 year olds and 17 year olds.
Concluded education is not in crisis.
They also looked at graduation rates.
They concluded that men need to go to work to contribute to the income of the family.
Females graduate more than males.
Presentation was to wordy.
Does politics influence our perceptions of whether education is in crisis.

My reflections of the finished student projects.

First impression - This project will require some creative thinking. That is good. I am not a teacher, but I do have passion about certain practices.
And the winner is? How to Ebay!
I carefully followed the instruction for the photo class. The student did a great job.

So , I ponder how to teach through the use of media, how to easily Ebay. I began putting basic data or simple sentences into a power point presentation as instructed by Beth. That part is completed.
I am wondering if there is a way to take screen shots off the internet to help further enhance the learning process.

I think I will also need the following:
A rubric: A way to grade the effectiveness of the students learning.
A word document : with an outline of how and who I am trying to communicate this to.
A webquest : A computer document tailored to directing the student to web links that help the Ebay learning process.
Another power point presentation: A ppt that is more of a worksheet to enhance the learning.
Provide photos of how to take photos of items to list in Ebay.

I am one of those students that likes to approach this one step at a time. Little bites are the way to go with Perry.

I am also departing Oct 3rd, this upcoming Weds. for Italy. A long awaited trip with 12 other motorcycle riders. We will tour though Tuscany for ten days. I plan to take this computer so that I may keep up with the homework. More learning through technology! Even overseas!
See ya Monday evening!
